We were supposed to have stopped in Sicily, Italy for our 2nd Cruise stop but because we had some pretty rocking weather - the ship was not able to go in to port at all so we had an extra 'Fun day at Sea.' Def. not what we wanted to do but we made the best of it and had fun on the cruise ship. So when got to our next stop of Cagliari, Italy (which is an island in the Mediterranean we were more than ready to be off the boat and exploring this beautiful area. So we hopped off bright and early. The little vendor people convinced us to get a tour that a van takes you to a whole bunch of different main site attractions. They made it sound like that was the only way to get around.... but after the first stop we realized it would have been very easy to walk and we had plenty of time to walk and see everything we wanted to see. So after the 1st stop we didn't even get back in the van except for transfer over to the beach and Devil's Saddle.
We first visited the Old City. Some really cook buildings and awesome views. One of my favorite parts of Cagliari was just walking down the streets. They were picture perfect and so fun to just immerse yourself in the every day lives of the Italians living here.
We took the stairs up this 'Elephant Tower' to get some more views of the area.
You could see our cruiseship off in the distance.
We made a stop at the Cagliari Cathedral... lots of cool facades and there was a crypt below.
The Roman Amphitheater that was built in the 2nd century AD... supposedly is still in used today in modern times but as we walked by it, it was gated off, construction equipment was in there (although it didn't appear they were doing anything), and it looked like the had been letting tours or anything for sometime.
While walking the streets we stopped at a couple of little bakeries and got some traditional goods... don't know what any of them were but they were all delicious.
After seeing all the sites of the old city, we took the van over to Poetto beach because we wanted to hike up to Devil's Saddle (the little U-shaped dip on the mountain behind me). We thought it would be a little more populated and easy to find but you could tell although it was used it wasn't a hike that they made super tourist friendly (which is even better). After asking some locals where to find the trail, we made the little trek and made it to the 'Saddle.' Totally worth it and the hike wasn't bad at all. We only saw one other kid up there the entire time so it was awesome to what made it feel like the mountain to ourselves... and be able to see all the views from all angles. Along the way and at the top, there was a Punic-age cistern, the Poetto Tower and some ruins of military installations dating back to the World War II.
Here I am up on top with the beach that we started from in the background.
The mountain looked like a dog or wolf?? After hiking back down to Poetto beach, we got some Ice Cream, and then headed over to the beach to find, Pops, Nana, Whitney, Jordan, Tyler and his family all playing in the ocean water. We waded our feet and enjoyed the last little bit of the afternoon along the beach.
Before jumping on back on the ship we found ourselves so wifi, caught up with any emails etc, snapped a few more pics and got back on the ship. Another beautiful day in Italy!
